Those Who Understood
How the Spirit Forms People Who Can Perceive His Ways

I keep returning to Peter and John, not only to what they saw but to who they became. Come follow their journey with me, from misunderstanding and bold beginnings into the slow maturity of life with Jesus.
A PERSONAL INVITATION
The Question That Started This Journey
I have often wondered how two people can witness the same movement of God and understand entirely different things about what they have seen. What allows one person to recognize something that another overlooks? And perhaps more importantly, what happens after we recognize it?
These questions led me back to Peter and John. I was fascinated not simply by what they perceived, but by who they became. The men who once misunderstood Jesus, spoke too quickly, and struggled to comprehend the Kingdom standing before them would eventually become witnesses whose courage, restraint, wisdom, and love revealed years of formation in His presence.
Those Who Understood follows that transformation. We will move through the Gospels, Acts, and their later writings, attending to the ways understanding deepened over time. Because I have come to believe that spiritual maturity cannot be measured by how much we notice, how confidently we interpret a moment, or even how accurately we discern what God may be doing.
The deeper question is whether our lives are being formed into the likeness of the One we claim to understand.
If you have ever longed to discern more faithfully, to recognize God’s work without trying to control it, or to become the kind of person who can respond to Him with both courage and humility, I hope you will find a place within these pages.
From the Pages
From Chapter 1 · Near to Jesus, Far from Understanding
Peter and John had been held overnight. Now the rulers of Jerusalem sat before them, waiting for an answer, while the man whose healing had brought them here stood close enough to hear it. He was more than forty years old and had been unable to walk from birth. Each day, others carried him to the temple gate. He had been there so often that people knew him by sight. The day before, they had watched him rise, walk into the temple courts, and praise God on feet that had never carried him before.
He was still standing beside them. For years people had seen him carried to the gate; now the rulers could see him on his feet, listening while they questioned the men through whom he had been healed.
The question was not neutral. Peter and John had already spent the night in custody, and the rulers before them would soon admit that the sign could not be denied while ordering them not to speak or teach again in Jesus’ name. Whatever answer Peter gave would be heard by men already trying to decide what to do with the message attached to the healing. John stood beside him as he began to speak, and Peter spoke the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the One these rulers had crucified and God had raised from the dead. It was through Jesus, he told them, that the man before them stood well.
